If you’ve read LatinFlyer.com for a while (and I hope you do), you may have noticed that I’m a big fan of street art. It’s a cost-effective, creative and art-supportive way to spruce up a dull neighborhood or an ugly building. So I was thrilled to hear about the latest news from Cancun, Mexico‘s most popular tourism destination.
With its well-equipped all-inclusive hotels and its well-deserved reputation as an ideal place for a Mexico beach vacation, Cancun might not be the first place you’d expect to see this type of public creativity grow. But that’s what’s happening.
Last month, the first stage of an ambitious new street art project launched, with the transformation of two buildings in downtown Cancun and two in the city’s Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone). Colorful and creative, the works represent an international sampling of creativity by artists including Marisol D’Estrabeau of Mexico, Gonzalo Areúz of Mexico, Celeste Byers of the USA, Aaron Glasson of New Zealand and Interesni Kazki from Ukraine.
During the coming months, the project is to expand to include more buildings around the city. The second phase, scheduled for July 2-10, will bring new art to the facades of eight more buildings.
“We are excited and honored to welcome this wonderful new art movement,” said Lizzie Cole, CEO of the Cancun CVB. “Cancun is proud to offer both visitors and locals alike the opportunity to enjoy these unique art pieces, which perfectly align with the city’s fresh vibe and vibrant personality as well as its current environmental conservation efforts.”
This urban street art project is sponsored and led by government agencies including the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial (CCE), Comité de Imagen Urbana de Cancún (CIMUC) and Proyecto Panorama. The artists are donating their own time to assist with the completion of these murals.
