An Air Zimbabwe aircraft that allegedly caught fire on the evening of April 28, was said to have experienced an engine surge as a result of a foreign object being ingested by the left engine shortly after take-off.
This was discovered following the completion of investigations into incident that affected the Boeing 767-200ER (ZWPF), flight UM462 from Johannesburg to Harare on April 28, which resulted in brief sparks being seen on the tail pipe, which were extinguished shortly thereafter.
The left engine has since been replaced after the mandatory test flights and checks were successfully carried out. The aircraft is scheduled to be back in service on the evening of April 30, and normal operations are expected to resume shortly thereafter.
Air Zimbabwe stresses that the pilot took all necessary precautions during the incident, including checking all parameters, and concluded that there was no danger to either passengers or crew, hence the pilot’s decision to continue the flight to Robert Mugabe International Airport (HRE) where the plane landed safely at 20h35.
