In collaboration with the Technology Innovation Agency, the SA Department of Tourism is implementing the Tourism Technology Grassroots Innovation and Incubation Programme.
The programme aims to stimulate entrepreneurship and support start-up technology businesses in the tourism industry.
The Department and TIA are co-funding the two-year programme, with TIA being the implementing agent.
Technological developments have played a fundamental role in the growth of tourism and travel and, following the impact of COVID-19, are even more necessary.
Through its Enterprise Development Framework, the Department advocates entrenching technology as an integral element in tourism operations by supporting innovation in the sector through developing partnerships across the public and private sectors to leverage resources and skills for effective programme implementation.
The project will focus on four key elements of business development:
Business management skills of the entrepreneur through skills development and training.
The enterprise idea and prototype design and development, business availability and market testing, regulatory compliance, business/financial risk structure and quality standards.
Facilitate start-up funding and venture capital for business expansion.
Facilitation of market and trade linkages for commercialisation of enterprises.
The department is inviting proposals from South Africans aged 18 to 35. The closing date is January 8, 2021.
