Ethiopian Airlines has resumed commercial flights to Johannesburg and Cape Town and has introduced free COVID-19 Global Insurance Cover for all passengers travelling with the airline.
The cover is automatically included with every ET ticket for international flights operated and booked from October 1, 2020 until March 31, 2021. It is effective following the first flight outside the traveller’s home country and is valid for 92 days for return trips and 31 days for one-way trips.
The insurance covers medical costs, repatriation, evacuation and quarantine costs (if medically necessary) related to COVID-19 if a passenger tests positive while travelling. Cover of up to €150 (R2 930) per insured person will be provided for each full day that a traveller (diagnosed with COVID-19 whilst travelling) will need to spend in quarantine, up to a maximum of 14 days. If a passenger needs medical treatment for COVID-19 this will also be covered up to €100 000 (R1 951 470).
If a passenger is diagnosed with COVID-19 during their travels outside their home country, the passenger must contact the Emergency Assistance Line on +44 2 073 057 472. Medical services that have not been authorised will not be reimbursed.
Passengers will not be covered for the cost of mandatory PCR tests. Only if they are diagnosed with COVID-19 will the test cost be covered. Mandatory government quarantine costs will also not be covered.
Cover is applicable for tickets purchased on the airline’s website or via a travel agent. Cover is also offered on tickets purchased using loyalty programme miles.
