The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) is drafting a ‘destination Zimbabwe tourism recovery plan’ to facilitate the recovery of the tourism sector post-COVID-19.
It plans to roll out several campaigns to market Zimbabwe’s tourism attractions and to reassure source markets that ‘destination Zimbabwe’ will come out stronger post-COVID-19.
ZTA CEO, Givemore Chidzidzi, spoke with the Head of Corporate Affairs at the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, Godfrey Chief Koti, on his podcast, Ultimate Tourism Chat.
“The industry was in general agreement that recovery was going to be a long process and that it will be in three phases,” said Chidzidzi. “The first phase will focus on the domestic market and the second will be regional intra-Africa travel.” The international market will be the focus of the last phase.
Chidzidzi said domestic tourism could contribute up to 30% to total tourism receipts. “We need to really unlock the potential of the domestic market.”
He said the ultimate goal was to reassure the marketplace and encourage visitors to travel to and within Zimbabwe. “We do need to develop our digital presence on all platforms as, right now, we cannot go on any physical marketing roadshows.”
Zimbabwe’s Secretary for Environment and Tourism, Munesu Munodawafa, said on the Ultimate Tourism Chat podcast that he had seen confidence in the tourism market and stakeholders.
“We are going to focus on tourism within the continent and we do believe that traditional source markets for the country will recover and travel again to Zimbabwe.” He added that the Ministry was in constant communication with its source markets.
