Kenya has taken further measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 by selecting 86 hotels across the country to use as designated facilities to quarantine visitors for 14 days.
The names of the hotels were issued following reports of travellers complaining about excessive delays after being cleared by immigration, before being given the choice of either going into quarantine at designated government facilities or footing the bill at hotels.
Quarantine hotels include Hill Park Hotel, Hilton Garden Inn, Hilton Nairobi, Safari Park, Pride Inn Hotels and Four Points Sheraton. For the full list, please click here.
This is line with the directives given by Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary, Mutahi Kagwe, who also proposed discounted rates for hotels offering accommodation services to facilitate isolation of international visitors.
“We are appealing to you. These are people who came to the country with no plans to spend money in a hotel,” said Kagwe. “If normal rates in your hotels are KES12 000 (€104), you should be charging not more than 50% or even 25% of that because this is business you did not expect.
“Let me reiterate that all passengers coming to the country must undergo mandatory quarantine either at their own hotel, government-approved hotels or in designated government facilities.”
There are 25 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Kenya, spread across four counties: Nairobi, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale.
