Eschewing its typical hub-and-spoke model, American Airlines will connect tech-centric Austin to the tech hubs of San Jose and Boston beginning next April.
Both routes will operate twice daily beginning April 17.
“We added these routes with our customers top of mind to bring them closer to the places they value the most when conducting business,” said Vasu Raja, American’s senior vice president of network strategy. “While it’s not our traditional hub-and-spoke routing, we understand the importance of travel for the tech community and look forward to offering these new flights to our loyal customers.”
American will compete against JetBlue, Delta and Southwest on Austin-Boston, according to the website Flight Connections. It will compete against Alaska and Southwest on Austin-San Jose.
The Austin route isn’t American’s only one from Boston that doesn’t touch a hub. The carrier also flies from Boston to Syracuse and Rochester in New York and beckons vacationers with Boston-Cancun service, spokeswoman Nichelle Barrett said. American had a 19% share of domestic traffic in Boston as measured by passenger count during the 12 months that ended in August, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The carrier flew 18% of the Austin domestic market during that time frame and just 7% of San Jose’s domestic market.
American will operate the new Austin routes in a Boeing 737-800 featuring a 16-seat first-class cabin and power at every seat.
