JetBlue has placed its first new-generation Airbus A321 into service.
The first A321neo flew from New York JFK to Fort Lauderdale Tuesday morning. It’s just one of 85 A321neos that JetBlue has on order, including 13 A321LR (long range) variants and 13 A321XLR (extra-long range) variants.
The A321LR will enable JetBlue to launch London service from Boston and New York in 2021. The carrier plans to use XLR variant to fly further into Europe from the East Coast beginning in 2023.
JetBlue expects the A321neo to be 20% more efficient than its 63 older-generation A321s and to have the capability to fly 500 nautical miles further. The carrier will use the A321neo for the launch on Dec. 5 of what will become its longest route — the nearly 3,000-mile journey from New York to the Ecuadorean port city of Guayaquil.
JetBlue touts the comfort features of the aircraft. The new economy seats offer enhanced memory foam cushions, adjustable headrests and larger seatback pockets for laptop stowage.
The carrier has also introduced a pantry area opposite the mid-craft lavatory, which it says “will serve as an onboard gathering place for customers to stretch their legs and grab a free refreshment or some extra snacks throughout the flight.”
JetBlue’s A321neos will feature the carrier’s customary free WiFi, but upgraded to work on overwater routes.
