Further to yesterday’s report on the incidents around the towns of Graskop and Sabie, Tourism Update has established that significant steps have been taken to put an end to the recent spate of robberies and that there have been no further such cases in the region.
A high-level meeting of representatives of Provincial and National Departments, including National Department of Tourism, took place on June 19 in Nelspruit/Mbombela and was attended by South African Police Services, Crime Intelligence, and all tourism structures from the region as well as Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency and Kruger Lowveld Tourism. A reassuring statement was then sent out by the Mpumalanga MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison, Ms Gabisile Tshabalala, prioritising the situation.
“Through our colleagues at MTPA, Kruger Lowveld Tourism and all the neighbouring towns, we have managed to increase the vehicle patrols on all the roads and to ensure a strong police and security presence,” says Chris Harvie of Hazyview Chamber of Business and Tourism. “We are very relieved that no-one has been injured in the recent robberies and we are confident that it is completely safe for self-drive and all other visitors to continue to visit our beautiful part of the country. The region is integral to South Africa’s tourism product and that situation will be safeguarded through our ever-improving co-operation with the provincial government and the police.”
