The Government of Mozambique plans to transform the old part of the Port of Maputo into a ‘free zone’ to receive cruise ships, by installing the appropriate equipment to handle ocean liners, in a bid to boost cruise tourism.
Mozambican Minister of Culture and Tourism, Silva Dunduro made the announcement on September 10.
Cruise liners already call at Maputo, however, currently there are no special facilities at the port for the tourists on board. To address this, Dunduro said the dedicated port terminal was being built, and the project further included a restaurant for tourists, the setting up cultural ventures for tourists, such as an art gallery and a club that will host jazz sessions, and other cultural events.
The Minister relayed the message that the government wanted to have more organised tourism from which results can be seen.
Cited in Tuesday’s (September 11) edition of the independent daily ‘O Pais’, Dunduro said the project was now under implementation. Dunduro added: “There are infrastructures ready, and in a few months, I shall visit them,” reports O Pais.
Dunduro also said authorities were planning to improve three tourist attractions, namely, Barra, Tofinho and Tofo beaches in the southern province of Inhambane. This project will see an investment of 1.5 million meticals (€21 120) in building basic facilities for tourists and the public at large.
A major part of the initiative is to stop the spreading of informal construction in the areas, reports Macau News Agency.
