Piton de la Fournaise, a volcano on Réunion Island, erupted on July 13. This is the third time the volcano has erupted this year, having previously been active on April 3 and 27. The volcano is one of the most active in the world.
According to the Piton de la Fournaise Volcanic Observation (OVPF), seismic activity just before midnight on July 12 caused three or four eruptive mouths to open on the northern flank of the volcano. The first sign of magma appeared on the OVPF webcams at 04h30 on the morning of July 13.
As a result of this eruption, the government of the Indian Ocean island has closed access to the upper part of the Fouqué enclosure (a caldera on Piton de la Fournaise). Aircraft are also prohibited from landing in the area until further notice. The Sainte-Rose Coupé walking trail is also closed.
