There’s been way too much tragedy lately, especially in Mexico and Puerto Rico. The earthquake that has rocked Puebla, Morelos and Mexico City, together with the horrible blow that Hurricane María brought to Puerto Rico, have resulted in deaths and damage that will affect life for millions of people.
My husband is from Puerto Rico. And it’s been stressful to not be able to call or be in contact with his extended family on the island for so many days. It’s also been hard to hear about our friends who suffered through the earthquake in Mexico City. And as a travel writer, it’s been weird to continue writing about some destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean for already-existing assignments, without being able to fully confirm if some hotels and other businesses are even open.
It’s very important to continue promoting tourism to these destinations in the weeks and months ahead. After all, that will help bring money to both Mexico and Puerto Rico and help to support the economy, local families and rebuilding. But more important, right now, is to share information about how to donate to Puerto Rico and Mexico, so that assistance can grow in both places.
Here are some of the places where you can make donations to help the people of Mexico and Puerto Rico rebuild:
American Red Cross: The Red Cross Website allows you to choose what specific types of disaster relief you’d prefer to have your money directed to — including Hurricane Maria, Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey.
Cruz Roja Mexicana: The Mexican Red Cross accepts donations online and also has an Amazon Wish List for items that it desperately needs — including soap and diapers.
Topos Mexico: This nonprofit rescue group, staffed by volunteers in Mexico, accepts donations through PayPal on its Website.
United For Puerto Rico: Founded by the first lady of Puerto Rico, this organization is co-sponsored by several private corporations and funds hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
UNICEF USA: This United Nations organization focuses on helping children, and is responding to disasters including Hurricanes Maria and Irma and the earthquakes in Mexico.
