Iceland’s dueling airlines will make Dallas/Fort Worth their newest battleground next May.
Icelandair will start flying four times per week to Reykjavik on May 30. Dallas will be Icelandair’s 14th U.S. destination and its first in the southern U.S.
The announcement came just eight days after Icelandair’s upstart competitor, Wow Air, said that it would bring its ultra-low-cost service to Dallas on a seasonal basis beginning May 24. Wow will fly Dallas-Reykjavik three times per week. Dallas will be the carrier’s 13th U.S. destination.
The Dallas announcements portend to an escalating turf war between the two Icelandic carriers within the U.S. marketplace. Over a two-day span in late August, each carrier announced that it would begin flying to Cleveland next May.
Dallas is the fifth U.S. city to which Icelandair and Wow will both fly. Plus, both carriers fly to the Washington D.C./Baltimore area, with Wow serving Baltimore and Icelandair serving Washington Dulles.
Wow only began U.S. service in 2015.
The growth of both carriers in the U.S. comes as Iceland is experiencing a tourism boom.
