Named the new railways minister, Piyush Goyal took over his new designation from Suresh Prabhu who has been working in this ministry since the past three years.
In the recent cabinet reshuffle with effect from September, Goyal who was the former Power Minister, has been assigned the railways in keeping sync with the vision to modernize the Indian railways.
Citing Suresh Prabhu as his “mentor” since the last 20 years who introduced him to the power sector, Goyal said it was an emotional day for him to take over from Prabhu who is like an “elder brother”.
Goyal said that that the former Railways Minister has created a roadmap for the future and the new ministry just has to “run on those tracks.”
There has been a steady growth in terms of investments in the past three years and things like passenger amenities and growth in railways. “In fact, the huge ongoing exercise for capacity augmentation in tracks and network expansion, whose seeds were sown during Prabhu’s time, will start showing results in a year or so, with a much-needed push in execution, the minister said.
Goyal also have been assigned the portfolio as a Minister of Coal industry. Assuming the office, the minister’s first priority is to implement the soon to be launched Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed train. He will also have to fast track the station redevelopment project and work towards making the railway tracks safer.
