There are two big draws to Lake Atitlan in Guatemala: the views and the Mayan villages. With Lush Atitlan Hotel, you get both. It’s got panoramic lake and mountain vistas, but you’re a footpath away from San Marcos Village.
The property sits by the lake, built next to a rock cliff that’s incorporated into the design of the rooms. Many bathrooms contain stone walls with showers or even small waterfalls, creating an organic feel that carries throughout the rooms and public areas. You get a true sense of place here, with lots of local woven fabrics, custom stained glass made by lakeside artisans, and local handicrafts. The owner crafted much of the furniture.
The house-proud staffers—some of them here since the opening—walk to work from their village or take a boat, but some are surprisingly fluent in English compared to many other Guatemala hotels. Service is smiling and attentive, making this a more warm and personalized experience than you’ll find in larger resorts.
This luxury Lake Atitlan hotel is sometimes listed as Lush Apartments and that’s because all of the rooms are more than a little rectangular box. They are set up as suites, usually with a separate living room and/or a furnished balcony.
There are only 12 rooms here at Lush Hotel, but each has its own unique look and feel. All but two have a view of the lake, which you can also see from many of the public areas. Getting to them can feel like going through a labyrinth, up 60 or 70 stairs at the end, but that’s part of the plan. The place is called Lush after all, and it does feel lush with all the tropical plants and trees that are homes for butterflies and birds,
Some rooms have fridges or kitchenettes and the largest Cascada suite has two bedrooms. This and the Mirador honeymoon suite top out at $225 on holiday weeks, $175 the rest of high season, so you might as well splash out. Breakfast with a view is included in the rates.
