Expedition cruise company Antarctica XXI said a new 100-passenger polar exploration ship would enter service in November 2019.
The MV Magellan Explorer is the first small passenger ship to be purpose-built for Antarctica in the last 14 years, said Jaime Vasquez Sapunar, Antarctica XXI’S president and chairman.
Being built by Asenav in Chile, the ship will be able to navigate first-year seanice during summer and autumn operations. It will have large fuel tanks and a fully stocked maintenance shop for extended voyages.
Antarctica XXI does fly-cruise packages that feature a flight over the Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica.
