The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCCA) in the Silo District on Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, will open on September 22.
Jochen Zeitz and the V&A Waterfront have partnered to open the Zeitz MOCCA. Zeitz has donated his African art collection and curators for the museum accept art donations from the public as well.
The museum comprises nine floors, 80 different galleries and 6 000 sqm of exhibition space. It has two sections, the top half, which is the elevator section, and the bottom half is the museum, occupying what were 42 grain silos.
It also comprises institutes – the Costume Institute, Centres for Art Education, the Moving Image, Performative Practice, and the Curatorial Excellence.
The museum promises to showcase Africa and African diaspora art and gives African artists and African diaspora artists international reach.
The museum was established with the promise of “access to all” said Carla White, Launch Director of Communication for the Zeitz MOCCA, at the Indaba meeting session on May 17. There is free entry for those under 18, and a single-day entry and membership fee for those older than 18. There are also dedicated school and children’s programmes.
The operating hours are Wednesday to Monday from 10h00-18h00. It is closed on Tuesdays.
