Canada is the No. 1 source of visitors to the United States. More than 20 million Canadians visit the neighbor to the south every year. Mexico is a close second with the UK a distant third. But where do most Canadians go? According to Statistics Canada these were the top US states visited by Canadians in 2015:

I am not a road tripper when it comes to the United States, so I personally don’t go exploring much beyond the specific destination/gateways I travel to. But one can say that most Canadians do like to drive long distances, especially from Ontario and Quebec to Florida. I assume most of these Canadians are snowbirds. Others are families driving down to Orlando. But what travelers who are not snowbirds. Almost 1 million Canadians visited Las Vegas by air in 2015. Another million visited New York City. These 2 destinations account for approximately 8% of all Canadian visitors to the US. (sources: NYCandCompany and Las Vegas CVA).One of the challenges for smaller destinations is that people don’t know about them. So Brand USA’s new campaign focuses somewhat on discovery. As Chris pointed out, “The campaign, which takes a social-first approach, will run across Facebook, Instagram, and various digital networks. This strategy aims to help potential travelers use their own social networks to discover the variety of experiences, hidden gems, and off-the-beaten-path destinations available throughout the USA.”
The campaign will run until September. I have not encounter an ad yet, but visiting the VisitTheUSA.ca website I learned about a few destinations I’d like to visit sometime, particularly the Assateague Island National Seashore to see the untamed horses.
Check out some unexpected destinations in the US on the VisitTheUSA.ca website.
