1. Tahitian vanilla sugar salted caramel apple pie – Random Order Coffeehouse & Bakery (Portland)
Hand-rolled buttery dough holds a blend of organic Granny Smith and Pink Lady apples, sprinkled with vanilla sugar salt and drizzled with house-made caramel for the pie version of a candy apple. Also on the menu: bourbon pecan pie (in case pecan pie isn’t delicious enough.)
2. Salty honey walnut pie – Three Babes Bakeshop (San Francisco)
With a cult following, Three Babes Bakeshop sells their wares at the Ferry plaza Farmer’s Market. The salty honey walnut pie is one of the favorites, with – you guessed it – honey-drizzled walnuts sprinkled with sea salt, like a modern version of pecan pie that is so SanFran.
3. Pumpecapple Piecake – Three Brothers Bakery (Houston)
Called the “Turducken of pie and cake,” this baby has been seen on Food Network, Saturday Night Live, Good Morning America, CNN & CBS Early Show, and more. Why? Because the three-layer “cake” is really an inception of whole baked pies within cake layers: a pumpkin pie baked inside pumpkin spice cake, a pecan pie baked inside a chocolate cake, and an apple pie baked inside apple spice cake — all slathered in house-made cream cheese icing. It stands 11 inches tall and weighs 23.5 pounds, and cost a whopping $250, but you’re really getting three cakes and three pies, so you know, it’s worth it.
4. Crack pie – Momofuku Milk Bar (New York City)
One of the most sought-after desserts at the famous Milk Bar bakeries, the Crack Pie is actually a crumbled oat cookie crust encasing a a butter/vanilla filling. Delicious, and addicting.
5. Tropical guava pie – Karla Bakery (Miami)
This Cuban take on America’s favorite dessert is only one of the highlights at this bakery: customers also love the yemitas (egg-yolk cookies) and specialty Cuban breads and pastries.
6. Frozen key lime pie (on a stick) – Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe (Key West)
Kitschy and gimmicky, sure, but it’s kind of mandatory to try key lime pie at the Key Lime Shoppe in Key West…so why not be “creative” and order it on a stick?
7. Chocolate haupia pie from Ted’s Bakery (Oahu)
A staple since Ted’s opened in 1987, this custard delight is two layers of velvety haupia (coconut) pudding injected into a chocolate-cream pie for a tropical flair that’s perfectly Hawaiian.
8. Sweet potato pecan pie – Devil’s Teeth Baking Company (San Francisco)
A layer of sweet potato filling at the bottom, pecan custard on top. This warm, gooey sweetness is perfect for Thanksgiving – and if you order a whole pie to take home, you can also get a whiskey butter sauce. Because it wasn’t delicious enough already.
9. Baltimore Bomb – Dangerously Delicious Pies (Baltimore)
In Baltimore, Berger Cookies are famous. So when the chocolate frosting-slathered treats are baked INTO a vanilla custard pie, melting together to form a fudge shell, it’s basically genius. If there was a Nobel prize for pie-making, this one would take the cake….er, you know what I mean.
10. Grapefruit pie – Salt’s Cure (Los Angeles)
The recipe is simple: follow the instructions for a key lime pie, but swap out limes for grapefruit. The graham cracker crust is still delicious, but now you’ve got a fun, tantalizing dance between sweet and tart…and we bet you’ve never had a pie like this one.
