Durban has lost the rights to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Sascoc President, Gideon Sam confirmed on Monday afternoon speaking to eNCA.
Sam said Durban failed to meet conditions to host the Games, including appointing a chief executive for the event. The Commonwealth Games Federation is quoted in Times Live as saying: “It is with disappointment that the detailed review has concluded that there is a significant departure from the undertakings provided in Durban’s bid and as a result a number of key obligations and commitments in areas such as governance‚ venues‚ funding and risk management/assurance have not been met under the revised proposition.”
Last month, Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, told media that Durban could stand to lose out on hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games as a result of lack of funding.
Liverpool has already indicated its readiness to host the Games should Durban not be able to.
