These are the three best food countries in the world for food in my opinion — and it’s close between the three. They are probably the only countries in the world where you can find great food almost everywhere, from big cities to small villages. Passion makes a difference, and Italians, Spaniards, and the French are passionate about food. I’ve eaten the best pizzas in the world and some of the best gourmet dishes ever in these countries. I also like that France and Italy have banned GMOs (as well as have a lot of other European countries), and it’s easy to buy organic food should you wish to cook for yourself on your travels. While these are my top European countries for food, I have to mention that outstanding fine dining is also possible within the rest of Europe on a budget. For example: you can have lunch at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Budapest for less than $13, and many of those amazing pizzas are as cheap as five euros.

These three represent the best of Asia. It’s all about the quality: always go for local cuisine in Asia. Skip the Western food (and not just because even at very expensive places I’ve stayed, Western food has often been below average – or in some cases really bad.) I have learned my lesson, which means that even if I miss food from home, it’s always best to eat local.

This one may be a surprise, but this small country is full of exceptional restaurants – including 132 Michelin-starred ones. Wow! I’ve had quite a few memorable meals in this country including one particularly special evening at Hertog Jan in Bruges.

Mexico is another of the top cuisines of the world and should, of course, be mentioned. I don’t eat it that often outside Mexico, but had great meals in Mexico City, Cancun and San Miguel de Allende and would like to return again soon.

I have traveled several places in Greece, and the food is consistently good all around the country. I remember I had one of my best traditional meals anywhere in the world in the town of Monemvasia.

This one comes as a surprise for many. I could have selected Denmark, that is world famous for their unique Nordic cuisine, but South Africa is such a diverse country and offers fare from many different cultures. I have had many outstanding meals in this country. It is one of the few countries where you can eat at fine dining restaurants on a budget, and it is well worth it.
