The Department of Environmental Affairs has yet to release the latest rhino poaching statistics, and says the date and venue of a briefing will be announced in due course. The last quarterly briefing was held in September 2016.
While official figures on rhino poaching have not yet been released, during the State of the Nation Address, President Jacob Zuma said there had been a decline. “We welcome the decline in rhino poaching incidents since October 2015, which is the first time in a decade. This arises from intensive joint operations by law enforcement agencies,” said Zuma.
The DEA said it was currently liaising with SANParks as well as various government departments, including the South African Police Service, the National Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigation, the State Security Agency, the Department of Defence as well as the National Prosecuting Authority, to secure a mutually satisfactory date.
“The Department of Environmental Affairs remains committed to transparency with regard to the release of information on rhino poaching, including, but not limited to, the latest poaching statistics,” the Department concluded in a statement.
