Malaysia-based low-cost carrier AirAsia X will begin service to the U.S. on June 28, the company announced Friday. The carrier’s first U.S. route will go from Honolulu to Osaka and then continue on to its base in Kuala Lumpur.
Flights will be offered four times per day. Through Feb. 26, AirAsia X is offering introductory one-way rates of $99 between Honolulu and Osaka and $149 between Honolulu and Kuala Lumpur for travel between June 28 and Feb. 6.
AirAsia X will be the first Southeast Asia low-cost carrier to service Honolulu. The Korean low-cost airline Jin flies to Honolulu from Seoul.
AirAsia X currently flies to 23 destinations in the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. The carrier is the long-haul, low-cost affiliate of AirAsia Group, whose nine airlines fly to more than 120 destinations worldwide.
In an interview this week, AirAsia X CEO Datuk Kamarudin Meranun said that if this service is successful, routes from Osaka to San Francisco, Los Angeles and even Las Vegas could be in the offing.
“We will be bringing America closer to Asia just as we brought Australia closer to Asia,” he said.
AirAsia X operates a fleet of 30 Airbus A330-300 aircraft with a standard two-class configuration of 12 flatbeds and 365 economy seats.
