Tourist guide, Daniel Dunn died this past weekend.
Dunn was born in October 1946, in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Dunn offered tours around Cape Winelands, Cape Point and Peninsula, Garden Route tours, and cultural and township tours.
He studied navigation while working for Irvin & Johnson.
Dunn was also involved in community development and upliftment in Mangete and surrounding areas. After 11 years of service with Rotary International, a non-profit organisation that aims to bring positive change in communities, Dunn was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow recognition. The award acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1 000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
Dunn’s website describes him as a “tour guide with a difference”. By way of explanation, he added: “I am very enthusiastic about being a tourist guide and showing guests around South Africa, particularly the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal. I love to share my fascinating family history and introduce you to remarkable people who live in our beautiful rainbow nation.”
Positive feedback on tours offered by Dunn highlighted his friendly spirit and sense of humour. Colonel Gorden B Rodgers, from the US said: “This is to thank you for an exceptionally good tour of the Cape Peninsula. Your congenial, friendly manner with a Danish couple and an American man who were strangers to you and to each other made us feel like old friends.” Similarly, Marion and Keith Kimblin from the UK said Dunn’s tour had “exceeded even their most optimistic expectations”.
Dunn is survived by his wife, Angela, and two daughters, Danielle and Laverne.
