Chip Conley, Airbnb’s head of global hospitality and strategy, is stepping back from his full-time role with the company and will become a part-time consultant.
His new title is strategic adviser for hospitality and leadership.
Airbnb hired Conley in 2013 to spearhead efforts to standardize its hospitality operations.
“I’m making this transition because my job helping the founders was originally supposed to be 15 hours a week but quickly became 15 hours a day,” Conley wrote in an e-mail to Travel Weekly. “I’ve loved helping steer this rocket ship the past four years, but I’m ready to relax a little and write my next book.”
Airbnb said that Conley “has been an integral part in making Airbnb the company that it is today.”
“Through his work starting the hospitality team, creating the business travel program and launching the Airbnb Open, he has raised the standards of our platform and been a constant champion for our community,” Airbnb said in a statement. “We’re grateful that as he scales back his day-to-day role, he’ll continue to be part of Airbnb’s future.”
Prior to joining Airbnb, Conley opened or managed more than 50 hotels in a hospitality career that now spans three decades. Conley founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality in 1987, when he acquired San Francisco’s Phoenix Hotel.
