During a quick one-night layover in Mexico‘s capital, my husband and I stayed at Hotel Plaza Revolución, a Mexico City hotel located downtown. Here’s what we thought of the property.
THE AMBIANCE: With a history that goes back something like a decade, the Hotel Plaza Revolución has benefited from a handsome renovation that’s resulted in subdued, attractive decor and modern amenities. Located on a small, uncrowded side street near the Monumento a la Revolución, this Mexico City hotel aims for a middle-of-the-road price range, with more amenities than a limited-service hotel but lower prices than a full-service property.
The lobby is decked out rather elegantly, in comforting tones of brown and dark blue, with arm chairs, tables and bookshelves partially lined with vintage books. The guest room hallways have a pleasing, traditional-yet-modern striped wallpaper and calm indirect lighting.
THE GUEST ROOMS: We stayed in room 210, a rather small room that faced a wall in the back — no view, but they’ve dealt with that in a rather creative way: Someone painted the wall with a pleasing graphic pattern, so it’s more like staring out at a work of art than a blank wall. Another thing I really appreciate: The large vintage photo mural, showing the construction of the nearby revolution monument, which is mounted on a sliding platform that doubles as a blackout blind (I believe each guest room has some type of photo mural, based on the photos I’ve seen on the hotel’s website).
The room is outfitted with a small dresser, work desk with comfortable chair, wall-mounted flat-screen TV (unfortunately the remote control didn’t work very well), two bottles of water, a large wall mirror (nearly floor to ceiling), and a king-size bed with both accent lights and reading lights. There is a small closet with hangars and a safe-deposit box. I’m not sure if the floor is real hard wood (probably not), but it’s attractive and adds a contemporary feel.
The bathroom is a decent size, and I especially like the gray tones and the pedestal sink, which provides a nice vintage touch in keeping with the hotel’s history. The walk-in shower is relatively large.
HOTEL FEATURES: The lobby of the Hotel Plaza Revolución is a pleasant place to hang out, and are tables around the breakfast buffet area (which is included in some room rates). There is also a small business center and meeting space.
The biggest selling point is for this Mexico City hotel is probably the price, cleanliness and central location, a few blocks from Parque Alameda and the rest of the historic city center. The immediate neighborhood doesn’t offer a whole lot in terms of restaurants or activities (although the revolution monument is just a couple blocks away); for most things you’ll need to walk several blocks or take a taxi or Uber, but it is convenient for those looking for a decent hotel at good rates near the Centro Histórico (historic district).
BEST FOR: Budget-conscious vacationers and business travelers who still appreciate a slightly more elegant style, near the historic city center.
