I’ve been travelling solo since 2008 – over 8 years – and in that time I’ve experienced highs, lows and everything in between. I’ve had some unforgettable moments but also some saddening ones, and of course there have been some weird and wacky experiences too!
That time I dressed up in a kimono and was followed by Japanese TV news…
Perhaps one of the weirdest travel experiences for me was visiting Japan, mainly because I was followed by TV cameras and interviewed by local journalists everywhere I went. Japanese people love to interview foreigners about what they think of their country, so having a travel blogger visiting a relatively unknown prefecture meant they were extremely curious to hear my thoughts. I ate fugu (the blowfish that can kill you if not prepared correctly) and let a lady dress me up in full kimono attire. It was one of the most surreal experiences of my life and half the time I had no idea what was going on. Oh yeah, I also bathed completely naked in a Japanese onsen (public bath), which was my first time stripping off in a hot spring.
That time I visited a penis museum in Iceland…
Yup, you heard me, there is a museum dedicated to animal penises. I’d heard about this museum from a fellow journalist so just had to check it out while I was in Reykjavik! Officially called the The Icelandic Phallological Museum, this building houses a collection of more than 280 real penile parts of all different kinds of animals found in Iceland, including whales, polar bears and walruses. You can even see the private parts of a 95 year old man, which are preserved in formaldehyde. If that’s not weird I don’t know what is.
That time I ate the hottest hot sauce in the world in Texas…
I’m always up for a challenge so when I heard about the hottest hot sauce in the world at Tears of Joy in Austin, I said I’d give it a go. Apparently the woman who tried it before me actually screamed, so I wasn’t looking forward to it. The gentleman in the store dipped a toothpick in the sauce and put a tiny bit on my tongue, then the pain began. At first I thought it wasn’t that bad but then gradually the heat grew and grew until tears were rolling down my face. I had a swig of water but that just made it worse, so the only thing to take the heat away was a visit to the ice cream store across the road!
What are your weirdest travel experiences? I’d love to here them – just leave a comment below!
