I rarely ever send postcards because, if I’m completely honest, I just can’t be bothered with the hassle of buying one, writing it, buying stamps and finding a post box while I’m abroad. Which is a shame because actually it’s a really nice, thoughtful gesture.
In my grandparents’ day they used to write letters to each other, mail postcards and rely on the idea that when a person says they’ll show up, they’ll show up, because mobile phones hadn’t been invented yet. When I think about it, it’s way more romantic than an email or a text. But fast forward to the present and we’re so busy posting pictures to Instagram or Tweeting our whereabouts that writing a postcard has become a bit of a forgotten art form.
Enter Postsnap, an app that lets you send real customised postcards and greetings cards from your iPhone or iPad. You don’t have to worry about post boxes or stamps because they’ll do all the work for you. Costs are just £1.99 per postcard and £3.49 per greeting card, plus they offer FREE Royal Mail 1st Class Post in the UK. It’s the modern day way to send a postcard, and since Postsnap’s printers are England, it won’t take long to reach the recipient if they’re in the UK. You could be travelling through Australia, Europe, Asia…and your card will still reach Mum within a few days. If you’re posting to someone in another country though, they do worldwide shipping too.
I tried them out recently and I thought I’d share my experience:
The modern way of sending postcards
I decided to start by making a postcard from myself, to myself. I did think about sending one to a friend but I wanted to see what the quality would be like, so I had it delivered to my home address. The app lets you sign up via email or Facebook, or there’s the option of guest checkout if you don’t wish to sign up at all.
Within the app you can choose from a variety of fun designs for postcards, greeting cards, announcements and invitations. Each design can then be personalised by taking a picture on your phone, or by choosing one from your camera roll, Instagram, or Facebook.
For the postcard option, I selected pictures on my camera roll from my recent trip to New York. The app lets you add photo effects, borders and text, then on the back of the card you can write your own personal message. You can also add your own signature by making a hand drawn doodle on the screen and uploading a photo. Then all you need to do is add a name and address, which can be saved to your contacts for future use.
When it comes to checkout time, the app let’s you pay by credit card, debit card, PayPal and Apple Pay – which is great because I was able to simply pay using my Touch ID fingerprint. Easy peasy! The postcard arrived within a couple of days and I was really happy with the quality. A glossy finish, high quality printing and best of all, I didn’t need to worry about how much postage would cost.
Once I was done sending my postcard, I decided to create a personalised birthday card for my Mum with a photo of us in the design. Her birthday isn’t until mid-December, but Postsnap has a cool feature that lets you shcedule the card to be sent at a later date. It lets you choose a delivery date and see the estimated arrival dates, so you can make sure the recipient will receive it. Since I can’t be there for her birthday (I live in London and she’s up in Manchester) – it’s a great way to send a card in advance knowing it will be there in time! If you don’t want to miss your Mum’s birthday, you can also set birthday reminders so you’ll never miss them again!
The whole process with Postsnap is really quick and reliable. Plus, if you want to save even more money, you can purchase Prepay credit. For instance, if you prepay £25 into your account you get £3.00 free, which is great if you plan on sending multiple cards. I was really happy with my postcard and I can’t wait to hear what my Mum thinks of her birthday card!
