When it comes to planning adventure travel in Africa, there is no experience quite like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
If this item has been on your bucket list for some time, the time has come to scratch it off. In this article, we will walk you through the steps that you will need to follow when booking a trip to Kilimanjaro.
1) Choose when you want to go
2) Gear up and get vaccinations
Some items that you will need to climb will be provided by your tour operator, but you will need to bring many climbing essentials yourself.
This includes (but is not limited to): an extreme weather sleeping bag, a bivy sack/climber’s tent, crampons, an all-weather parka, UV ray diffusing eyewear, an ice axe, etc.
Ensure that you have all travel vaccinations required for travel to Tanzania. Yellow fever is most important, as not only will you not be allowed to return home without proof of vaccination, but contracting yellow fever is an extremely miserable experience.
It carries a relatively high risk of death (upwards of 7.5%), and debilitating health problems (such as liver disease) can develop upon recovery.
3) Get there
Next, book the flights that will get you to Tanzania. From London, you will want to hop on a short flight to Amsterdam or Frankfurt.
From these two destinations, catch a connecting flight on either KLM or Condor respectively to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
After arriving, take a shuttle to your base hotel/hostel in Arusha, where you will either meet up with your pre-booked tour operator or find one prior to heading out to the base of Kilimanjaro.
4) Hire a guide/tour operator
When it comes time to learn how to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, your guide will be indispensable. Having ascended and descended this peak countless times, they will be able to relay to you the knowledge that you will need to climb one of the world’s highest mountains.
Although it is a lot of work to do, we recommend calling prospective guides before slapping down your credit card.
By asking basic questions about safety and the Kilimanjaro experience, you will be able to get a feel for how legitimate they are as an operation.
