With the holiday season right around the corner, chances are there’s at least one flight itinerary in the works. However, frequent travelling can really take a toll on your complexion. Check out these tips and keep your skin glowing while you’re on the go this season.
With the excitement of the holidays and celebrating with loved ones, it’s easy to get off schedule. Stick to your regular skincare regime, and make sure you cleanse at least twice a day. It’s also a good idea to bring your own products along when you travel. While some can get away with using any old thing, it’s wise to avoid complimentary hotel or airport toiletries altogether — especially on your face.
Stay Hydrated
This one may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s easy to forget to drink enough while you’re on the go. Skip the inflight coffees and cocktails and opt for tea and water. Keep yourself hydrated with a HydroFlask that keeps your water cold the entire flight. And because changes in elevation can be especially drying for the inner nostrils and lips, you’ll want to make sure you bring along a travel-sized tube of Vaseline and/or lip balm. As for your face, you’ll want to make sure to give your skin an extra boost of hydration by applying a good moisturizer.
Don’t Forget the SPF
Flying at high altitudes puts you closer the sun and its damaging UV and UVB rays. In fact, every time you fly you’re exposed to a bit of cosmic radiation (1 hour of flight time equals about 20 minutes in a tanning bed.) Protect your skin and don’t skimp on the SPF. And, just as if you were outdoors on a sunny day, make sure to reapply every few hours, especially if you’re on a longer flight.
Steer Clear of Complicated Pre-Vacation Facials
Aside from planning your vacation wardrobe, trip prepping usually includes hair appointments, manis and pedis and maybe even a visit to your waxer. But, before vacation, it’s best to avoid having a facial done, especially if it’s close to your departure date. Facials and other skin treatments can sometimes cause skin to look blotchy and irritated for a few days afterwards, so unless you’re not overly concerned about any potential flare ups, it’s best to avoid until after any major events.
Also, while facials remove dead skins and blockages, they also open up the pores, which when travelling, can make your skin more susceptible to germs. This can also potentially lead to breakouts and may undo all your facialist’s hard work.
Go Naked
While we all want to look vacation chic, it’s better to skip your makeup routine for plane travel, especially if it’s a particularly long flight. If makeup is an absolute must, it’s best to use a primer after moisturizing, which keeps a protective layer between your makeup and your skin. Or, consider using a hydrating mist to spritz your skin every hour or so.
Take Extra Care
When you finally settle in, take extra special care with your skin. Carefully cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize to prevent any travel germs or pollutants from causing any irritation. If you find you have a bit of dark circles or bags under your eyes you can wrap a bit of ice in a clean towel and create a gentle, cooling compress. Apply an eye cream after, if so desired. You’ll also want to make sure to get a good night’s rest, and repeat this cleansing and cooling routine in the morning to help you feel energized and refreshed.
Watch Your Diet
Skin health starts with a hydrating, healthy diet, and chances are, all the airport and on-the-go foods aren’t going to give you the vacation glow you’re after. Try to incorporate some foods rich in omega fatty acids, such as salmon, nuts and avocados. Pack turkey or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to avoid the allure of greasy fried foods in the airport terminal—your skin and your waistline will thank you.
Get Zen
Travelling, especially around the holidays, can be stressful. Stress is bad for your whole body, but often, its effects can be seen directly in your reflection. Try to stay as relaxed as possible. Wear loose, comfortable clothes, swap sugary sodas or caffeine-laden lattes for soothing teas instead. You may even consider downloading a meditation app or listening to some soothing music.
