Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said the tourism industry needed to market South Africa more effectively rather than complain about the impact of visa regulations.
Gigaba also told Sunday Times that delays at OR Tambo International Airport and other ports of entry were not expected to end soon as immigration officials struggled to implement the new requirements. “We are piloting collection of biometrics at OR Tambo, and plead for the understanding of international travellers at the extra wait times as we try to increase the number of immigration officers within our resource constraints,” said Gigaba, addressing the International Foreign Correspondents Association last week.
Gigaba said the department was continuing to look at ways to facilitate entry of legitimate tourists and business travellers, both from visa-exempt and visa-required countries. “Accordingly, we are expanding the issuing of long-term multiple-entry visas to frequent travellers, businesspeople, academics and other trusted travellers from visa-requiring countries in Africa and BRICS,” he added.
