Javed Malik, former Co-Chairperson of Skywise Airlines is in the running to become the next CEO of Mango.
“All I can confirm at this stage is that I am in conversation with Mango about taking the job, but the rest is now up to the board,” Malik told Tourism Update.
He expects a final decision to be made within the next few days.
Malik, together with former business partner, Tabassum Qadir, launched low-cost carrier, Skywise, in February last year. The airline operated the Johannesburg-Cape Town route and intended to launch more domestic and even regional routes but the was grounded by Acsa in December for failing to pay various airport fees.
Mango founding CEO, Nico Bezuidenhout, left the airline at the end of July to head up pan-African airline, fastjet. Nic Vlok was then appointed acting CEO but sources inside the SAA group have told Tourism Update the former Skywise co-chairperson is set to be named the airline’s permanent CEO.
Hein Kaiser, head of communications, could not confirm or deny the rumours.
“No decision has been made,” he told Tourism Update. “The board is still in the process [of appointing a new CEO] and the decision will be reviewed at a board meeting in this regard,” says Kaiser.
Malik says many aviation experts will support his appointment as Mango CEO. “Since the news broke yesterday (September 15), I have received numerous calls from aviation experts around the world saying they would support my appointment as Mango CEO because the aviation industry needs transformation.”
