Boutique hotel operator Joie de Vivre this winter will open its first New York property, Hotel 50 Bowery, which will give a nod to its Chinatown location in design and cuisine.
Guestroom corridors will have a look inspired by an old Chinese village after dark, while artwork from Beijing-based graffiti artist Dake Wong will be featured. Materials in the lobby, such as poured concrete and exposed brick, are punctuated by Asian-influenced furniture. The hotel will have a permanent exhibit from the Museum of Chinese in America.
Dale Talde’s Three Kings Restaurant Group will operate three establishments. The lobby-level Rice & Gold will be a contemporary Asian restaurant. Goldie’s, a cellar-level lounge serving dim sum, will have an opium-den theme. The 21st-floor rooftop bar will be called 21@50.
Talde, a three-time competitor on the Bravo channel’s “Top Chef,” has eponymous Talde restaurants in Brooklyn, Jersey City and Miami Beach.
The property will also include a 5,000-square-foot outdoor space called Atlantic Garden, which is named for the 1850s-era beer hall that operated at the site. The site at various times served as a tavern and a gambling den as well as a vaudeville and movie theater between the 1700s and the early part of the 20th century.
The hotel will be operated by Commune Hotels & Resorts, Joie de Vivre’s parent company.
