On a Friday morning, after a 9 hour 45 minute flight from Las Vegas to London, I land at Heathrow feeling tired, jetlagged and generally worn out. I’ve been on back-to-back trips to Georgia (the country), Canada and finally Las Vegas, so I’m feeling the need to detox and rest up in the house for a while.
I arrive at the spa looking rather worse for wear – dark circles, dishevelled hair and makeup-free – but I’m hoping a House of Elemis can rescue me. The treatment I’m signed up for is a Couture Technology Treatment, which basically involves any 30 or 60 minute Elemis Biotec facial with a personalised Freestyle Deep Tissue Massage or Deeper than Deep Hot Stone Massage.
I’m greeted downstairs in the Elemis shop by Megan, who asks me to fill in my details on an iPad. She then takes me upstairs to my treatment room, where she asks me a series of questions about my general health and what I’m looking for from the treatment. Do I want to leave feeling relaxed or do I want to feel invigorated and ready to go? I go with relaxed. I tell her I developed some pain in my upper back while I was in Canada, so she agrees to focus on this area with my massage.
Megan analyses my face using some sort of hi-tech scanner, which throws up 3D images highlighting all my problem areas on a screen. My skin is dehydrated, thin in patches and showing combination areas, so we decide to go with a facial that will hydrate my skin. I try not to feel too disheartened as I see the visual evidence of all the stresses I’ve put on my face.
The treatment begins with the massage and as she works her magic on my back using De-Stress Massage Oil, I start to really forget about life’s stresses. The facial though is the exciting part. Megan passes an ultrasonic device over my face that uses 26,000 vibrations per second to remove the dead skin from my face. This feels a lot less damaging and irritating than a scrub. I then feel a lovely cool liquid being spread over my face, which I’m later told is galvanic hydrogel serum. Megan presses a mask over the top, then passes a negative current over my face to encourage skin renewal, followed by a positive current to seal everything in and make it absorb faster.
The terms are all a bit alien to me but when I look in the mirror afterwards, my skin looks shiny and radiant. After I’m dressed I meet Megan downstairs, where she shows me the products she’s used and suggests a daily skincare routine, including a Papaya Enzyme Peel and Pro-Collagen Hydra-Gel Eye Masks for after a long flight. I throw back a quick refreshing ginger shot, then I’m on my way home to get ready for an evening of drinks at Aqua Kyoto, one of my favourite London rooftop bars. I feel radiant and relaxed – perhaps a little too relaxed when I step out into the bright daylight and crowds of Oxford Street.
The Verdict
If you’re shopping in central London, House of Elemis is in a great location not far from Oxford Street, Bond Street and Mayfair. Since I live in Marylebone, House of Elemis is just a short walk for me, so it’s actually the ideal spot to stop and rejuvenate between trips!
The one thing I do feel inclined to mention is that the shop itself is quite small and you have to walk up a narrow flight of stairs to get to the treatment rooms, so it does feel quite cramped. The House of Elemis has a modern environment with a focus on the treatments as opposed to the decor and space. I did feel very relaxed in my treatment room though and Megan was lovely – she had a soothing Aussie accent and really knew her stuff.
In the long run, the couture treatment left me with extremely supple and smooth skin on my face and it was definitely a great way to wind down after a long flight.
