Maldives has now got its first PADI-certified free diving centre, Aquafanatics. The resident free diving champion, Mari Kagaya, originally from Japan, has been an instructor since 2002 and has been based in the Maldives since 2006. Mari has held several records and has reached a depth of 46 m.
Free diving is entwined with the cultural heritage of the islands in the Indian Ocean. Since ancient times locals have harvested sponges and clasped gleaming pearls from beneath the waves. Devoid of heavy equipment, free diving relies on the diver to hold their breath. With every dive, guests acquire the ability to stay below a little longer, discovering more on each descent.
Aquafanatics is available to guests of Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort, Anantara Veli Maldives Resort and Naladhu Maldives. A multitude of water sports from scuba diving to surfing and deep-sea fishing to sailing are also available to guests of all three resorts.
