Ditch the tour bus. Forget looking for flights. Don’t even think about renting a car. Some of the world’s most amazing destinations take a little extra work to get to, and in this case, that means taking a boat. Check out these remote locations, and then when you find yourself yearning to explore, start your search for a hotel right here on Gogobot.
1. Phi Phi Islands, Thailand
2. Yelapa, Mexico
Though it’s not an island, there are no roads to Yelapa — which means it has remained less over-developed (and less crowded) than its neighbor, Puerto Vallarta. To get there, take a water taxi from Marina Vallarta.
3. St Kilda, UK
This fascinating island off the coast of Scotland saw its last residents leave in the 1930s, but intrepid visitors can still explore the remains of thousands of years of human habitation, including some eerie abandoned cottages. Visits can be arranged by cruise ship or yachts.
4. Floreana Island, Ecuador
Part of the Galapagos Islands, Floreana has perhaps the most intriguing history of the lot: it was the first to be inhabited, was once the site of a penal colony, and is known for a number of mysterious disappearances. Visitors arrive on a boat from Santa Cruz Island.
5. South Georgia Island, Antarctica
There are no airstrips on South Georgia Island, so those wanting to see the incredible flora and fauna (penguins!) of this Antarctic island must arrange a tour by boat.
