How does a treehouse without electricity sound for an earth-friendly eco retreat? The Urnatur village of hand-crafted cottages and treehouses in Sweden’s Holaved Forest offers just that. Kerosene lamps and wood-burning fireplaces offer that touch of retro and get-away-from-it-all peace.

If you’re accustomed to luxury like room service, spas, and beauty salons, you might want to rethink a stay at Hedonisia. This sustainable eco-retreat is a living community, and travelers have the option to volunteer work time in exchange for a discounted stay in rooms that are beautifully integrated within the rainforest – like sleeping in a retired school bus.
Chena Hot Springs Resort
Pleasant Valley, Alaska
by: Scot Nelson flickr – Courtesy: Gogobot
This resort is located smack-dab in the middle of a natural hot spring, which is, of course, integrated into the hotel’s spa and wellness packages. Aside from its rural location (and a glass-topped facility for guests to view the Northern Lights), the hotel stays green-conscious by producing 100% of their electricity from renewable energy and utilizing alternative fuels, solar water heaters, electricy-free gravity-powered water dams, and operating an on-site plastic-to-oil conversion machine which produces kerosene, gasoline, and diesel. They even offer free daily geothermal renewable energy tours for guests to learn more about their energy-saving projects. Plus, an on-site greenhouse (yes, in Alaska) grows organic produce for the hotel’s restaurant.
Hidden Hotel by Elegancia
Paris, France
by: Natasha B – Courtesy: Gogobot
Natural materials and repurposed wood make this Arc de Triomphe neighborhood facility feel more like a secluded cabin in the woods than a cosmopolitan city boutique hotel. Roots and tree stumps comprise many of the pieces of furniture (and dishes!), while sinks, bathtubs, and other amenities are carved out of stone.
The Orchid
Mumbai, India
by: Neha Wasnik – Courtesy: Gogobot
Widely considered one of the pioneers in green innovations, The Orchid holds 80+ international and national sustainability awards. Always ahead of the curve, this game-changing hotel was built from the ground up, using all upcycled and recycled materials – right down to the concrete and cement, which consist mostly of fly ash, and the internal panels, which are made from fertilizer waste.
Barefoot Resort
Havelock Island, India

Book a stay here well in advance – they max out fast. The thatched cottage beach village is not only the nicest along Beach No. 3, it’s the cheapest – and for an eco-friendly stay at around $4/night, is that any surprise?
Briar Rose Bed and Breakfast
Boulder, Colorado
by: Sheri Thompson – Courtesy: Gogobot
Organic animal-free breakfast (no eggs or bacon), all-day tea time with organic teas, a zero-waste policy (they’re an Ecocycle partner and use green cleaning supplies), and a community-oriented approach to lodging makes this stone cottage in Boulder a great option for those seeking some privacy from the hustle and bustle of a commercial, plugged-in world.
