After nearly three years of renovations, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is finally re-opening after a major makeover by Norwegian design firm Snøhetta. 1. Over half the 1,900 works of art on display are new, so even if you visited before the renovation, there is a lot more to see.
2. There’s a new rooftop garden with a “living wall” measuring in at 5,000-square-feet, making it the biggest in SF.
3. The new restaurant In Situ by Corey Lee, chef-owner of three-Michelin-starred Benu, will feature a rotating menu of dishes by 80 chefs from around the world — perfect for those foodie/travel fanatic/art buffs.
4. The new space is not just about still art. There’s also a theater and Roman steps for performances.
5. With seven floors of exhibition space, it will be the biggest museum of any kind in Northern California, and one of the biggest art museums in the world.
6. Memberships start at $100 and gets you free admission for you and a guest (tickets are usually $25 for adults, so this is a steal if you and your guest plan on visiting multiple times).
7. On a budget? The 45,000-square-foot first floor is free and open to the public.
Tickets for the re-opening on May 14th are already sold out, but you can still visit on other days. It will be open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm through Labor Day.
