The San Francisco Bay Area is not short on hiking trails — there are hundreds winding around the region’s mountains, clifftops, beaches and forests. But come summer, when the sun is blazing, going for a hike can be an unpleasantly hot and sweaty affair. We don’t think that’s a good reason to stay indoors all season, so we’ve compiled a list of parks that have trails with plenty of shade to keep you cool. Though, for the sake of your trailmates, we might still advise a little extra deodorant.
Portola Redwoods State Park (South Bay)
Beautiful State Park with lots of big Redwood and Douglas fir trees. After a long windy road to get there, you have choices of beautiful short or long hikes and some biking routes.

This place is one of my favorite hiking places in the area. I love coming here in the summer since it’s usually really cold here because the redwood trees prevent the sunlight the area.

The microclimate in this park is perfect for the trees, no high winds, lots of water and no extreme temperatures. These conditions also make it ideal for a good hike or run, the shade of the trees will protect you from the sun and the lower-than-normal temperature keeps you fresh. Take advantage of this gem and go hike!
