Melbourne is one of my favourite destinations in Australia – partly because it strikes me as having similarities with some of the European cities I’ve visited. In summertime Melbourne has beautiful weather, so this is the perfect time to hit the nearby beaches such as St. Kilda and Brighton Beach, or head further afield to places like the Mornington Peninsula and the Great Ocean Road.
Remember summertime in Melbourne is the opposite of European summer, with the hottest months between December and March. This is not surprisingly a very popular time of year to visit but with a little planning you can easily find cheap flights to Melbourne. If you plan on going there during these months, there are some summer activities you should not miss.
Open air cinema
This is one of my favourite summertime activities in Melbourne. In St. Kilda, Ben and Jerry’s open air cinema nights provide the perfect mix of summer entertainment and laid-back food. If you arrive before dusk, you’ll enjoy soundtracks from Melbourne’s favorite indie bands as you watch the sun setting over Port Phillip Bay. Order some refreshments as you enjoy new release and cult classic films.
White night
Every local in Melbourne with a sense of adventure descends on the city for this one night every year. White Night is absolutely awesome. For this one night every year, the city is transformed into a sea of creativity, culture and lights, with the city streets filled with people from 9pm to about midnight. There are street performances and light installations on specific landmarks around the city, as well as dancing and music. It’s definitely one of those occasions you can see the city in a different light.
Despite the name, wearing white during white night is absolutely optional.
Rooftop bar hop
Seize the sunshine with an afternoon spent rooftop hopping through the city’s rooftop bars. For a garden party with a view, consider starting with lunch at Madam Brussels, situated on Bourke Street. After this, drop by Brunswick Street for cocktails at Naked in the Sky bar, then finish the evening by going to Silgo on Spring Street for wine and whiskey.
Croquet
It was originally considered to be for old or fancy people, but of late, croquet has undergone a transformation. K-Mart can lend you a croquet kit and you can set up on virtually any location with grass. With a bear and mallet in hand, hit the balls through pegs. The Royal Croquet Club is the perfect place to play – it was originally in Adelaide, but it now tours its way through Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. You can typically play some croquet, drink some beer and eat some food out in the afternoon sun.
Unbelievable yoga
Water and yoga combined with standup paddle yoga creates a unique water-based yoga experience. The Peninsular Stand Up Paddle School is located one hour southeast of Melbourne, along Victoria’s picturesque Mornington Peninsula. Classes are available through summer with all equipment such as boards and mats provided.
Bottom line
These are some of the many best summertime activities you can do in Melbourne. I’d highly recommend making a trip to the Yarra Wine Valley and swimming with seals and dolphins on the Mornington Peninsula. There are also tons of music festivals – with Falls Festival and Laneway being my personal favourites.
