Not long ago I visited Benidorm and I found out that it’s not at all what I imagined. In the UK many people have this image of Benidorm being ‘Britain in the sun’, full of British pubs, mobility scooters, karaoke bars and lads on boozy weekends. I saw some of those things, but I also discovered so much more!
If you’re looking for a place where you can escape the harsh winters of Northern Europe and enjoy much milder temperatures, then this could be a place worth discovering for yourself. And if you search the hash tag #benidormalwaysummer you can get plenty of inspiration for things to do!
Amazing beaches
I was really impressed with the beaches in Benidorm, particularly Poniente Beach, which is south facing, so you’ll have the sunshine on you right up until sunset. Levante is the busiest beach and has plenty of facilities, and from here you can take a jet ski tour to Benidorm Island or learn to scuba dive in the waters surrounding it. If you prefer something quieter then I highly recommend visiting Tio Ximo cove and Almadrava Cove, which are small beaches with sand and rock.
Beautiful Scenery
As I cycled along the coastal path of Sierra Helada Natural Park, I couldn’t quite believe I was in Benidorm. The scenery here is beautiful and so peaceful, with secluded coves and views right out across the ocean. A highlight of my trip was driving up to The Cross at the Top, which reminded me a little bit of visiting Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. In the winter months lots of people come on cycling holidays to Benidorm, biking up into the mountains nearby.
Luxury Resorts
I never thought of Benidorm as a luxury destination but it turns out there are two stunning resorts here. I stayed at the Melia Villaitana, which is like its own little village with Moorish architecture, a gorgeous swimming pool and two golf courses. I also had the chance to visit Asia Gardens – a Thai-themed hotel with lush tropical gardens and a relaxing spa. Whatever the time of year you visit, these two hotels have so much to offer that you could spend a week here just chilling out and being pampered.
Great Food
No Benidorm isn’t all British food and fish & chips. You can find some great Spanish food too! The town has many pubs and restaurants that serve tapas (small plates), pintxos and local wine, or you can try local dishes such as fish casserole or red mullet with pumpkin rice. Want to learn how to make Spanish food youself? At Benidorm Cooking Experience Jesus and Miriam will teach you how to make classics such as patatas bravas and paella. Throughout the year Benidorm also celebrates several gastronomic events including Hot Dishes Week, Tapas and Pintxos Competition, The Gastronomy Week and Rice Dishes Week.
In addition to all these sights and activities, Benidorm also has an extensive calendar of festivals and events, which you can check out here. Have you been to Benidorm? Would you visit? Share your thoughts below!
