Located in West London, the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham has a lot to offer the millions of tourists who descend on the city each year. Whilst many tourists tend to stick to the areas around the City of London, it is well wroth being confident enough to branch out a little further and see what else the city has to offer. Here are some of our favourite things to do in Hammersmith: –
Westfield London and Other Shopping
Boasting around 250 shops from high street to designer brands, the Westfield London shopping centre is one of the largest in the UK and is the ideal place to visit if you want to enjoy some retail therapy with the added bonus of having such a variety of stores all under one roof. However, there are also several other places worth exploring in the area if you want to rustle up a bargain or two. King Street and Fulham Broadway both offer a good selection of high street brands and independent boutiques and for the true bargain hunter a must visit is Shepherd’s Bush Market; it open Monday to Saturday and has just under 100 stalls with a variety of items and produce. The Market has recently celebrated its 100th birthday and is a well-loved fixture in the area.
Ravenscourt Park
London is well known for the large number of parks and open spaces it can boast but often visitors choose to head to well known parks such as St James’s Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens. Alongside these great royal parks there are also many wonderful smaller spaces and one such place is the borough’s flagship park: Ravenscourt Park. Just under 3 acres, Ravenscourt Park boasts a paddling pool and kids’ beach (during the summer months), various wildlife habitats, children’s play facilities, sports facilities, a lovely walled garden and a tea-house and garden centre as well. This is a perfect option if you are staying in accommodation near Hammersmith and want somewhere a little off the beaten track to escape for a short period.
Fulham Palace
Another worthwhile attraction if you are staying in the area, perhaps at the LUMA hotel central London is Fulham Palace, which has long been home to Bishops of London. This historic house and garden can boast over 1,300 years of history and visitors can discover the role the Palace has played in British history in the Museum of Fulham Palace which is free for members of the public. The Museum is home to paintings and artefacts which depict the history of the site. It is also possible to take a historic tour of Fulham Palace itself (no Bishop of London has resided here since the late 1970s) although there is a small charge for this.
Shepherd’s Bush Empire
If you are looking for entertainment, then the historic Shepherd’s Bush Empire is the perfect choice. Built in 1903 as a music hall, it went on to be used as a BBC TV Theatre in the 1950s before returning to its roots and becoming a music venue once again in 1994. The Empire offers a wide variety of performances from fringe music to comedy.
