Traveling is not just about the perfect moments you post on your social media accounts while on the road. There’s a lot that goes on in between the glossy images of beachy sunsets, llamas at World Heritage sites, and you holding up the Tower of Pisa — a lot that is decidedly embarrassing. Read on for some of our most common blush-inducing moments, and then get started booking your hotel for your next trip (because no true traveler lets a little awkwardness get in the way of adventure).
1. Feeling a sudden, uncontrollable need to use the toilet… and not being anywhere near one
2. Accidentally telling someone you’re horny
Or pregnant. Or farting. There’s a lot that can go wrong when trying to speak in another language.
3. Getting hurt or sick and having to explain your ailment in mimes
Have you ever tried to explain an embarrassing problem (like, say, a yeast infection) to a pharmacist in a foreign country? Awkward.
4. Giving your airplane seatmate a warm caress on the leg while trying to find your seat belt
That’s one way to get to know someone before an eight-hour flight.
5. Getting on the wrong train
Don’t feel bad. Some systems (*cough* Tokyo *cough*) are seriously hard to navigate. Just smile and nod to hide your panic until you can get off at the next stop.
6. Getting angry — usually at the airline check-in counter — about something really stupid
Probably because you haven’t slept in 48 hours.
7. Walking in on someone in the airplane bathroom
Why are those locks always broken, anyway?
8. Having your suitcase break
Rolling a bag with one wheel? Yup. Seeing all your dirty clothes in a tub on the baggage claim carousel because your bag exploded? Been there, done that.
9. Running out of underwear
And then having to wash some in your hotel sink… much to the delight of housecleaning.
10. #TippingFail
You just got off the plane — you don’t have any local cash. Or you don’t know the appropriate amount to give your waiter in whatever country you are in. It’s all so stressful. But for the record, your doe-eyed stare does not count as a tip.
11. Breaking cultural norms
Showing up underdressed to a formal event, not taking off your shoes, using the wrong hand when eating. We’ve all forgotten to do our research — and hopefully learned our lesson.
