Today, July 1st, Canada is celebrating 149 years of being an independent nation. Canada did not fight for independence. It basically just asked for it. No humans or animals were hurt in the making of Canada. Since July 1st, 1867 Canada has worked hard to become the nice, friendly and beloved country it is today. Here are 10 travel Top reasons why we love Canada.

2. The Alberta Rockies. Don’t take our word for it. Visit the beautiful town of Banff in Alberta and take the ride to the top of Sulphur Mounain. You’ll then know what we’re talking about
One of the most beautiful road trips you can ever take is around Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. © Canadian and World Tourism .com |
3. Lobsters and Cape Breton Island. Nova Scotia. Take a road trip around Nova Scotia in the summer, starting in Halifax. Head to Cape Breton Island. Nova Scotia Tourism (NovaScotia.com) is very good at helping you plan your trip. Give them a shout. Cape Breton Island is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. And if you like lobster, you can eat it every day.
4. The Northern Lights. In the winter months, the Northern Lights shine brightly in many parts of Canada’s north. I recommend going to Whitehorse and taking a tour there. While you’re in Whitehorse in the winter (brrrr…) I also recommend a dogsled adventure. People love their dogs up in Yukon and they have great mushing teams up there.

5. Quebec City. Ah, romance, great food, historical walled city. Enough said.
6. The Toronto International Film Festival. Who doesn’t like the movies? Put on a great film festival in the most-multicultural city in the world and you get, perhaps, the best film festival trip in the world. If you want to come to the festival you must book your trips and get your movie tickets months in advance. TIFF is always a smash hit with locals and visitors alike.

7. Skiing in Whistler, BC or the Big 3 in Alberta or Mont-Tremblant in Quebec, or, or, or. Lots of places to ski in Canada during the winter, but the 3 mentioned are the most famous and with the most fun infrastructure. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced heli-skier, you will find your mountain in Canada.
In Canada you don’t need to rough it when you want to commune with nature. You can, if you want. There are plenty of places to go camping and portaging for all levels of skills. But there are also beautiful cottages and Inns in areas like Muskoka, north of Toronto where one can commune with nature and still have some of the comforts of the city. 8. Muskoka Lakes. Ontario. Muskoka is not an area for mass tourism. While there are several resort type hotels, the charm of the place is mostly as cottage country. Thousands of Torontonians and many Americans summer in Muskoka every year, whether it’s for a weekend or the entire summer. Many famous celebrities own or have owned cottages and private islands in Muskoka. We love Muskoka because it’s a great way to commune with nature (without having to camp or portage – which are also great travel activities, but not for everyone).
9. Toronto. Montreal. Vancouver. Do I need to explain? I think not.

10. The people. One of Canada’s strengths is its diversity, most palpable in Toronto, followed by Montreal and Vancouver. One can find people from all over the world. But all Canadians are for the most part welcoming people and very friendly (4th in the world according to some surveys – but we’ve been in 1st place before and we will be back. Currently, it looks like New Zealand and Australia beat us- but we won’t hold it against them – on the contrary, we’re so friendly that we definitely congratulate them).
